Class 9 Science Note

Carbon and its Compounds

The compounds of carbon with elements like oxygen, nitrogen hydrogen is called organic compounds. E.g. methaneCH4), ethane (C2H6), propane (C3H8), butane (C4H10) Organic compounds do not go electrolysis as they are formed by covalent bonds.

The compounds which contain the element other than carbon is called inorganic compounds. E.g. carbon dioxide, sodium chloride (NaCl), Carbon monoxide (CO), Hydrochloric acid (HCl), Lead oxide (PbO). They are formed by electrovalent bonds and can undergo electrolysis.
